Things NOT to say to your wife

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

As a husband of a pregnant wife, there are things that are better left unsaid. And here is a list of some of them.

"Not to imply anything, but I don’t think the kid weighs forty pounds."
"Y’know, looking at her, you’d never guess that Pamela Lee had a baby!"
"I sure hope your thighs aren’t gonna stay that flabby forever!"
"Well, couldn’t they induce labor? The 25th is the Super Bowl."
"Darn if you ain’t about five pounds away from a surprise visit from Richard Simmons."
"Fred at the office passed a stone the size of a pea. Boy, that’s gotta hurt."
"I’m jealous! Why can’t men experience the joy of childbirth?"
"Are your ankles supposed to look like that?"
"Get your *own* ice cream, Buddha!"
"Got milk?"
"Maybe we should name the baby after my secretary, Tawney."
"Man! That rose tattoo on your hip is the size of Madagascar!"
"Retaining water, huh?"
"You don’t have the guts to pull the trigger, Bessie."

Having a first child joke

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

A man and his wife were making their first doctor visit, the wife being pregnant with their first child.

After everything checked out, the doctor took a small stamp and stamped the wife’s stomach with indelible ink.

The couple was curious about what the stamp was for, so when they got home, the husband got out his magnifying glass to try to see what it was.

In very tiny letters, the stamp said, "When you can read this, come back and see me."

Bottled or tap water?

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Parents are often wary about the kind of water that their kids drink when they are at school or when they are outside playing. Depending on your location, the water that comes from your tap may be just as good as the ones that are bottled.

In some people, there are common pollutants in tap water that can post serious problems with their health. These are the type of people who should be careful with tap water:

1. Those with weak immune system.
2. Those with HIV/AIDS.
3. Those who take in steroids.
4. Those who are being treated for cancer.

Handling the gaming experience

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Sure enough, playing video games is something that most of the kids are into this days. As parents, it is our duty to be on the lookout for the violence that they will be able to see while playing those games. However, if you would just try to look at the way your kids play, you would notice something else - posture.

Yes, video games are probably the most viable reason for incorrect posture. Kids may want to play while lying down or lying by their chest and sticking their heads too high. The neck is the one being damaged most of the time. You would then notice that they are currently holding their painful necks and massaging it.

So next time you play video games, try not searching for violence from time to time and try looking at their posture.

Wearing glasses

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Back when I was a kid, I used to wear glasses to correct my sight. I often get teased at school. The word "nerd" flies by to my hears every once in a while. That is one of the reasons why my mom was having a pretty hard time making me wear my glasses.

If you are a parent and your child has to wear glasses, here are some suggestion on how to make him wear those glasses.

1. Let him be the one to choose the design of the frames and make sure that you compliment him on how he looks good with those glasses.
2. Start by having him wear the glasses for short periods. After some time, they will get used to it.
3. Make them wear glasses while doing something they love to do like watching a movie or reading a book.
4. Make it a daily routine for them.
5. Always mention sports heroes, actors and other family members who wear glasses.

Violent games

Monday, July 21st, 2008

I hate to be the one to say this but there is a reason why they write parental guidance on the boxes of video games that are violent in nature. There were studies that show that after a child plays a violent video game, it arouses their amygdala, a part of the brain that has something to do with emotional arousal.

Chances are, when they get into a slightly similar situation that appears like the video game, they may end up doing something violent as a reaction to the situation.

As a parent, it is their duty to do what it takes to lecture a child that a video game is merely just a video game designed for entertainment, fun and some logic. It is not meant to be practiced in real life.

The importance of religion

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Religion is something that what most experts would say as important to children. No matter what the religion or belief it is, it still shows some utter importance to the lives of children. According to one of the experts, there are three reasons why religion is important.

First, it is because religion brings social support to parents. It is also important for kids to hear an important message from other adults. This would take more to heart the messages that they get when they are at home.

Second, the values that one could learn in a religious congregation tend to become more focused on self-sacrificing and pro-family. This is very important in the way parents could shape their children and how the kids should respond to the challenge.

Lastly, religious organizations imbue parenting with the sacred meaning and a lot sacrifice.

There may be a lot of questions when it comes to beliefs and religion but having one thing that a family believes in, will definitely help in the growth of a child spriritually, socially, and emotionally.

Caring for stitches

Friday, July 18th, 2008

When your kid gets a pretty deep cut after playing some rough games, it is best to have it stitched to close the wound. The stitches need to be properly cared for to prevent significant scarring and a lot of infections. Here are a few things that you can do to keep the stitches clean.

1. Keep them clean and dry. Wash the area within one to three days of getting the stitches.
2. If recommended, clean the wound with water thoroughly dry and bandage after 24 hours.
3. Wash off the dirt and crust that forms over the stitches.
4. If you see a light yellow fluid drains from the wound, keep it covered.
5. With the approval of your doctor, you can add antibiotic ointment on the wound to reduce infection.
6. Keep the wound elevated above your heart as much as possible for up to 2 days after getting the stitches. This will reduce the pain and swelling.

Why dogs bite children

Friday, July 18th, 2008

There are numerous reasons as to why dogs tend to bite children more. Reasons such as their territorial behavior, anxiety and medical issues are just to name a few. If you have a pet dog and you have a 6 year old child, you have to keep a close look at them. Here are some of the main causes of a dog’s aggression.

1. Young children are more likely to be bitten when a dog feels that they are being threatened by the kid to take away their food or toys.
2. Dogs bite older children when they feel that they are taking over their territory.
3. If a child is familiar to the dog, he might be bitten while the dog is guarding his own food.
4. unfamiliar children could be bitten mainly because the dog was protecting his own territory.

Keeping kitchens clean

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

(HealthDay news) For a parent, the kitchen is probably one of the major places that they need to keep clean. Why? This is because this is where they prepare that food that their children will eventually eat. Children have very delicate stomachs and they could easily get sick when germs start to enter their systems.

Here are some suggestions in keeping your kitchen clean and germ-free. This list is a courtesy of the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearing house:

1. After a week, wash all the sponges, rags and towels in the washing machine using hot water.
2. Make sure that all of the utensils are clean before using them and before keeping them, wash them thoroughly.
3. Kell all the counters and surfaces clean before and after preparing the dishes. Clean them with a solution of bleach.
4. Wash your hands with warm water and soap before working in the kitchen and especially when handling food.
