Caring for stitches

When your kid gets a pretty deep cut after playing some rough games, it is best to have it stitched to close the wound. The stitches need to be properly cared for to prevent significant scarring and a lot of infections. Here are a few things that you can do to keep the stitches clean.

1. Keep them clean and dry. Wash the area within one to three days of getting the stitches.
2. If recommended, clean the wound with water thoroughly dry and bandage after 24 hours.
3. Wash off the dirt and crust that forms over the stitches.
4. If you see a light yellow fluid drains from the wound, keep it covered.
5. With the approval of your doctor, you can add antibiotic ointment on the wound to reduce infection.
6. Keep the wound elevated above your heart as much as possible for up to 2 days after getting the stitches. This will reduce the pain and swelling.
