Children learn most of what they have to know from adults. Observation is one of the tools that they employ in order to survive in this world. Setting a good example to your kid is very important. Who said it will be easy? It won’t. Why? Because you have to be a full time parent and a full time good person as well.

I could remember an experience that happened to me when I was a toddler. My mother set a pretty good example to me that I carried it until this time. I knew that whatever I am now is the product of what my mom showed me. If I was an arrogant lad, then maybe my mom set a pretty bad example before.

As an adult and generally as a parent, you must be mindful of what you show your child. Your actions will spell the future of your child.

Teachers

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Do you remember the saying that the school is the second home? On my case, that is true. I used to stay at school even more than the time I spend at home. I have great friends, great environment and some of the best teachers ever.

Being a parent means being a teacher as well. You have to be the guide of your child in order for him to learn. A teacher can be a really great parent and vice-versa.

Kids are hard to deal with especially when they do things that are beyond your control. I knew that almost all my life since my aunt is a public school teacher. She takes good care of her students as if they were his own children. She never had a child and never married. Maybe it is because she already have a whole bunch at work.

Teachers serve as our guide for a better life and they will always be around to help us not just academically but for our self improvement as well.

I don’t want to go!!

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

It was that time of the year again for my son to have his visit to the dentist. I take him there 3 times a year for check-up and cleaning. Considering the fact that my son hates his doctor so much, I know that begging him to go will take a lot of time again.

8:00 AM. I started talking to my son and told him that we need to pay a visit to the dentist. He says no. Of course he does. That’s what he always do. And so, I needed to plant a bait. I told him that if we go to the dentist now, I will play with him at the arcade. He still said no. I usually get him there but not this time. I asked him what he wants. He said, he wants a Wii. Wow. That was expensive. Since I also wanted to get a wii. I might as well do it earlier than wait until Christmas.

It was a pretty expensive way to bribe my kid but then his health is much important than a wii.

My Day Care

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

I am a businessman and I need to travel a lot and talk to clients in nearby states. More often than not, I leave my son in my sister’s place because my wife is also gone most of the day to do her duties as a doctor. Yesterday, my sister was on vacation so I had to drop my son off to the daycare center.

A few weeks back, I already knew that my sister will take the week off so I had to look for the best daycare center that I could find for my kid. I found a couple and prices were the same. Ambience is important for me and so are the people. I looked around and found the perfect place for my kid.

I even saw my neighbor there with his kid so I never doubted the fact that this daycare center will do good. People were hospitable, friendly and playful to the children and as a bonus, they have different activities where kids will learn and have a lot of fun.

Without a doubt, my kid will have a blast!

Music Preference

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

My neighbor’s son used to play really great classic music with his guitar. I used to listen often when they have this special gathering. But, things changed when he turned into his teen years which got me a little worried.

His preference for music has changed into what most people call "Black Metal". His voice sounded like the ones coming out of Emily Rose. It was creepy and gave me the chills when I heard it. Being the worried parent and friend that I am, I gave his parents a call. I talked about the music preference of their son.

They also noticed it but they said that their son is also doing well in school and in fact, he will be receiving awards for poetry and music. They said that the music is alright because he started getting into metal at the right time - when he can make decisions for himself and not be influenced by musicians. It was then that I realized that music indeed has an effect on people but the final answer will always land in the people who listen to them. If they want to get affected, then for sure they will be.

He remembers!

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

There was this time when I noticed that my son is not so used to Grandma. Well, I should not be surprised because my mom lives 3 states away from us.

While I was talking to a friend of mine, he somehow got to tell me that his baby had a good memory. He said all babies have a great memory. He gave me a trick to make use of my son’s memory and to remedy that problem with Grandma.

I showed my son a couple of pictures of Grandma and I did it periodically every single day. After a week, I started showing it to him once for every week. After 3 months when we had to visit my mom, she became a familiar face to my son already. Just like that he remembered everything. Babies never cease to fascinate me!

Mother’s love

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

I was in a slum area last night after throwing my garbage. I noticed a lady with her daughter who seems to be around 7 years old. They were sharing one piece of burger. One burger does not even make me full! What more for two persons?

It was then that I realized how blessed I was for having a much better life. At least I get to eat my heart out. But as I looked at them, the kid was pretty happy to be with her mother even if life is not treating them well. Why? at first I didn’t know but when I observed some more, I suddenly realized that the kid was blessed to.

How was she blessed? That’s because of her mom. Her mom just had half a bite of the burger and gave her everything else. It was a typical mom who would starve for her beloved child.

Belated Happy Mother’s Day to every mother all over the world! Cheers for the great job!

Sending my son away

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

It seems like yesterday when my son just said his very first word. It was like yesterday when he graduated High School. Now, my son is setting off to Syracuse to fulfill his dream of being a basketball player someday.

He got a scholarship to play for Syracuse next season. Being the athletic person that I am too, I guess my son got the love for sports from me. But then originally, I would want my son to become a lawyer. Someone respected and wears a pretty decent suit.

I got struck when he told me that he can still be respected because of his basketball skills. True enough, people around him admire his mad skills so much. Also, he could get to wear nice clean suits as well. I realized that indeed, my son has grown up to be the man that I want him to be - responsible. I had doubts at first but I am sure that my son will wow the whole world after 5 years.

My son’s first toddler toy

Monday, May 12th, 2008

I noticed how much my son loves to pile books up and making a really tall tower out of it. Even though he can’t read that good yet, he managed to make stairs out of my encyclopedias and other books. Well, it is a lot of work but you have to admit that those cute eyes spell a the difference when it comes to scolding time.

Because of his interest in towers, I think its time to buy him a set of lego bricks. I picked the big ones first so that there will be no way for it to fit in his mouth. However, I still keep an eye on him every time he is playing with it just in case he does something that could hurt him (or me!).

Last night, he finished his first tower. Man, that was high! Hopefully one day, I would have an engineer or an architect in the house! For now, let’s just stick to lego.

My son is a hacker?!

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

I was doing my son’s laundry and after drying it all up and folded them neatly, I went up to his room. I didn’t know he was there. I went in and to my surprise, the command console is open, the Internet is active and I saw the commands of telnet. He is hacking his way into an open port of some network outside of our own. How did I know? That’s what I did at work before I got into the creative industry. It’s not new because this information is free on the Internet. Anyone can get answers. Weird thing is, my son knew that he was doing something illegal. He shut the computer down when he saw me looking at it. it was too late though. Why? Because I saw everything already. What I saw was enough to asses that he was tampering with someone else’s network.

I sat down, talked to him and said, "Hey, what you are doing can get both of us in jail." IP address can be traced and there are a lot of things that can happen that could lead the feds directly at out doorstep. I gave him an ultimatum. I told him to e-mail the network administrator or simply leave a note saying that there is a breach in their security and apologize for his conduct and they have to work on the security breach as soon as possible.

This suddenly made my son a white hat hacker. I told him never to do this again because this type of hacking is destructive. I told him to continue studying though. Who knows? One day I may have the next CIA agent.
