Caring for the Environment

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Teaching your kid to care for the environment is a good way to bond and a great way to help save the community where you live in. After all, when your kid grows up, he may live in a different community but the values that he will learn will play a major role in saving the place where he is staying. Here are a few things to do so that you will be able to inculcate the value of the environment to your child.

  1. Recycle Papers. Teach him to reuse papers and make designs. This way, he will be able to realize that even the used ones can become something attractive instead of just throwing it away.

  2. Proclaim him as your assistant. Give him the task of reminding you to turn off the lights and conserve energy. Make him issue tickets every time you fail in doing so. This way he will also conserve energy on his own.

  3. Teach them to collect water from rain. When its raining, you can have them place cans and use what they get to water the plants.

There are many ways for a child to learn to care for the environment. Set a good example and you’ll see that someday, they shall save the world where we live in.

Where’s Mommy?

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Playing with your baby produces a lot of fun and laughter. The good thing about this is that you have a lot of fun while your baby is learning in the simple process.

The game peek-a-boo may be too simple but it is an educational and fun experience for both of you. Get a towel or cover your face. Stay in front of your child and say, “Where’s mommy?”. Do not remove the towel or your hand by yourself. Let your baby do it. Then compliment him or her by saying, “Here’s mommy!”. This way, your child learns to control what he sees. It gives him joy to find someone that he loves. Add up some funny face to hype up the fun!

Spoon Feeding

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Your baby may be a professional in finger foods now but they will need to learn how to use a spoon eventually. The fork could still wait until he reaches around 18 months or older. So how can we teach them on handling a spoon? Actually, they already have a pretty good idea on how to use a spoon since they have been watching you do it all the time when you try to feed them.

First thing is to start with sticky foods. Be creative with mashed potatoes, rice cereals or applesauce will do. It will stick to the spoon far better than peas for example. Second tip is to try using the utensil at the start of the meal. He or she may be hungry at this time and will eventually work hard to eat with the utensil. Next is to anticipate frustration. Remember that he will surely fail on his first couple of tries. So be a good guide and help him out. Lastly, be prepared to clean the mess. It will be very messy at this time but it will all pass when he is already well acquainted with the utensil.

Career Day Talk

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Have you ever felt great that you were invited to talk to the class for career day? Everyone is out there looking and listening at you and how you achieved such success in life and having such a wonderful and intelligent child. But the problem is, do you know what to say? Here are a few things to consider in making that life changing speech:

  1. Ask the teacher for a list of typical questions that the children may ask.

  2. Find a simple way to explain your job. You may talk to your child to explain what you are doing. This way, you can use the words that are understandable to children of the same age and you get to correct any misconceptions in the process.

  3. Bring in props if possible. You may want to give out pens with company logos and if your company creates products then you may as well bring it and explain it in the class.

  4. Show them how you became interested and what traits you had to acquire that job. Explain what situations you encountered as a child that drove you to a conclusion that you want the job that you are into now.

  5. Be frank. Tell them what you like and what you do not like about your job. About not liking your job, tell them something like it is taking precious bonding moments with the kids. Its something that they will understand as they grow up.

Fat Factors

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Getting fat is one of the big problems for most parents. We may simply say, control your appetite, exercise and live a healthy lifestyle. But there are certain factors that affect the way we eat as well. This is very surprising I may say, but its worth try it out.

Research says that loud background music urges you to eat more and more. So turn it off and drop it in mellow tunes. Some say that a dimly lit dining room is also a big factor. Not being aware of how much you ate will encourage you to eat more.

These are just some of the factors. Control is still the key in achieving a lean body.

Responding to Rudeness

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

As much as possible, we parents would not want our kids to be talking back in a rude manner. We want them to learn as much values as possible. However, we can never prevent the inevitable. There will come a time that they will answer back. How do we deal with it? First, give your child the chance to know what is right and to correct it all by himself or herself. Second, let them know that you will not respond to a rude language. Ignore them when they speak impolitely. This way, you will know that you will not listen. Lastly, teach them how to discuss things calmly and make them think of the right words to say under deep pressure. With this at hand, your child will learn from his or her mistakes in no time.

Sleepover

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

There will come a point in time that your kids will enjoy a sleepover at their friend’s place or vice – versa. Last Saturday, my son’s friend slept over our place. He was just 4 years old, same as my son. My wife said they seem to be too young to be sleeping over. All I said was that it is never to young or too late for a sleepover unless they are ready for it. So what I did was, I talked to Mark’s (my son’s friend) parents and said the situation. I told them that they should somehow be prepared for a 1am call asking them to pick him up. Also, I gathered information about the kid like if he drinks milk or wants to wear socks at bed and the time he usually sleeps. This will help in dealing with the child and adjusting the way I speak. As far as it concerns me, sleep overs are fine and it will produce a good friendship between the two families.

Learning from the Simple Things in Life

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Being a child happens only once in the lifetime of your kids. It is a must that they come to enjoy and play around the simple things in life that may teach them a lot of lessons. Riding a swing may sound as simple but it sure has a lot of values in it.

For some time, you will be forced to push your child higher and higher as he or she enjoys the flight with you around. Teach them how to move with the wind, bend their heads and bodies respectively. They may be enjoying it this time because you are around to push them hard and catch them. In time, they will learn to do this on their own. They will experience falling several times, the will not reach the maximum limit that they wish to attain and many more. But, they will strive to learn it on their own and stand up for every challenge. This is by far the beauty of parenting – teaching your child to stand up on his or her own.

Acupuncture for Kids?

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

You may be thinking that it is utterly absurd to have your kid undergo acupuncture at a very young age. It has been proven however that it is a good way to treat asthma, allergies and even bed wetting. But to think that you will have your kid pinched by a bunch of huge needles? No, fear no more because there is a child friendly way of administering the same effects of acupuncture without putting needles inside. This is called the Japanese style shoni shin. It is by gently tapping and massaging the pressure points of children to create an electric current. It is proven to be very helpful. Why don’t you give it a try for a change?

Is Your Child Ready to Go to School?

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

As a parent we need to send our kids to school for proper education and training so that when they grow older, they will be mature enough to face the world. There are 5 things that we should take into account for before sending them to school.

  1. Are they toilet trained already? Make sure that they are because some schools require this.

  2. Can they be separated from you? Some schools take a short transition period.

  3. Can they interact well with other children? It is important that they can because they will have to deal with a lot of kids as they grow older.

  4. Can they take instructions? They have to know how to follow even simple school rules.

  5. Can they shift to different activities? Take a peek if they can notice time and change activities.

If you can answer this questions with yes, then your child is ready to go to school.
